Making a quietly remarkable technology easier to understand.

Vacuum insulated glazing has been on the market for more than twenty-five years, yet most people — including many who own exactly the kind of home it suits best — have never heard of it. This is an independent editorial project set up to change that.

Why we exist

Vacuum glass sits in an awkward gap. It is too specialised to get mainstream coverage, and the information that does exist tends to come from companies trying to sell it — which means genuine questions (Does it really last? What does it actually cost? Will my conservation officer allow it?) get answered in a promotional register, if at all.

We think that is a shame, because the technology is genuinely clever and genuinely useful. For anyone with single-glazed period windows — draughty sashes, listed-building constraints, a desire to keep original joinery — vacuum glazing can offer modern warmth without the wholesale replacement that thicker double glazing forces. People deserve a clear, unhurried explanation of what it is and whether it is right for them, written by someone with nothing to sell.

What we do — and don’t — do

We publish long-form explainers, comparisons and reference material about vacuum insulated glazing: how it works, what the products are, what the standards and UK regulations say, and how it stacks up against the alternatives. We try to be the resource we wished existed when we started reading about it.

We do not sell glazing, install windows, take enquiries on behalf of installers, or run affiliate links. We do not accept payment to feature or rank a product. Naming a manufacturer is description, not endorsement. And because every building and every window is different, nothing here is a substitute for professional advice from a qualified installer, surveyor or — for listed properties — your local conservation officer.

How we research

Everything on the site is built from primary sources: manufacturer technical datasheets, the international product standard for vacuum glass (ISO 19916), UK Building Regulations and Historic England guidance, and the peer-reviewed scientific literature — much of it tracing back to the University of Sydney group that invented the technology. Where we cite a figure, we have tried to attribute it; where a number is contested or promotional, we flag it. We also make a point of correcting the myths that circulate — for example that the original Pilkington Spacia reaches a 0.4 W/m²K U-value (it does not; that belongs to newer tempered products), or that vacuum glazing is "approved by Historic England" (which issues guidance, not product approvals).

Accuracy over hype

We would rather give you the correct, slightly less exciting number than the marketing headline. Where sources disagree, we say so and give a range.

Claim vs fact

When a figure is a manufacturer claim (a 60-year lifespan, a market-size forecast) or an indicative price, we label it as such rather than presenting it as settled fact.

Independent

We do not sell glazing, generate sales leads, or earn affiliate commission. We are not affiliated with any glass manufacturer or installer.
